A simple, affordable and clever device for home air conditioning automation
The Sensibo Sky, the second of its generation, is a great if simple idea, packaged in a sleek design and easy to use interface. It has made my quest to live in the future complete! I now have a fully wifi controlled bedroom thanks to this little gift of a device.
On a side note - I wonder why this brand isnt more popular or better known. Its absolutely great. I now live in the future - and its amazing.
The order and delivery process is simple and smooth and the device came faster than my last purchase. Much faster. It was on my study table in a week's time from ordering - the fastest turnaround time on a delivery Tejar's given me.
The device comes in gray or black and i strongly recommend the black. Goes with about every possible color scheme you have in a bedroom. Its stylish, so its installation wont clash with whatever themes you may have and it looks good. The sensibo did not ship with a wall mount bracket but it has the groove for a hanging or a nail mount or if poking holes in your wall isnt your thing, it has an adhesive mount at the back that you can use to stick it on your wall. I would recommend using some sticky putty to supplement it, just to make sure that it doesnt decide to randomly unstick itself. just to be on the safe side.
Installation is the simplest yet of any smart home device I've used. Install the app on your phone, power up the device, set an account, scan the code and its ready to detect your ac. Sensibo supports a large range of ACs, and you can check their website to see if your make (Gree non-inverter, in my case) is supported. Do that before you buy. To setup your ac, point your AC remote at the device and do the button press when prompted. Then wait for your phone to confirm. It takes about 45 seconds. And thats it. You now have taken your old dumb, remote controlled AC and turned it into a wifi enabled, fully programmable, geo fenced, Alexa and google home compatible, AC! Amazing. Telling Alexa to set the temperature or a timer or to switch the AC on or off, just doesnt get old! And we havent yet gotten tired of showing it off to friends and family.
Surprise Upside - An absolutely simple and amazing phone app that provides a truly astounding range of functionality and automation thats almost idiot-proofish-ly simple. You could get the most tech-challenged/scared person to easily run their AC from their phone and feel awesome about it.
Some downsides -
a. The device doesnt have a battery. It needs a constant power supply. And since it needs to be within a certain range of the AC its controlling, ideally below it about, ~2-3 feet max, you might end up with an unsightly cable running up your wall. So factor in cable management before you mount it/stick it to your wall.
b. No Siri/Apple Home Kit compatibility. It supports Siri Shortcuts but Siri struggles with even simple on off commands. Siri will switch off my LED lights when commanded to switch off the AC! Its hilarious, but frustrating. The manufacturer has said that Apple Home kit/Siri compatibility is coming. But no news yet on when Siri can take over. Which is unfortunate because I prefer Siri over Alexa when it comes to voice commanding my devices. Alexa is more accurate yes, but she is slower for some reason. Siri is much more responsive, in my experience and at the moment, my personal assistant of choice for home automation.
Best moment ever - I tell Siri, as I get up to leave the office and go home, 'Siri, I'm coming home'. When I reach, my LEDs are on and have my afternoon lighting theme going and the AC has cooled my room by the time I reached and then switched itself off! And the maid who was in my room earlier cleaning up has had a heartattack and screamed at my mother that my bedroom had a djinn in it and that an exorcism was in order! She refused to enter the room to finish cleaning until I showed her that I was doing all of this with my phone. 'What is this new magic?' she asked me!
Just to get that reaction alone from people - get yourself this Sensibo. Its issues will iron out - they're software related. No getting around battery and cable management though. But the functionality, control and that app control couple with geofencing options alone are enough to recommend this device to anyone interested in home automation.
